U.S. CDC Reports Decline in Coronary Heart Disease Prevalence

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported a decline in the prevalence of heart disease in the U.S. The findings, which were collected from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey and released in the Morbidity and Mortality World (MMW) Report, revealed a significant drop from 6.7 percent to a flat 6 percent for the period 2006 to 2010.
The researchers noted that the decrease in mortality due to coronary heart disease has been occurring for 50 years. “The decline in prevalence is consistent with the reported decline in the prevalence of a population at high risk (i.e., persons with uncontrolled hypertension, uncontrolled high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and current smokers).”
The MMW report also contained distinctions in coronary heart disease prevalence in people of different ethnicities or race. Other factors such as age, gender, educational attainment or state of residence were also considered in determining targeted prevention programs.
The researchers also highlighted the prevalence of coronary heart disease in several states. Most notable are Hawaii and DC having the lowest number of occurrence for 2010 at 3.7 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively. On the other hand, West Virginia and Kentucky have the worst rate of coronary heart disease prevalence in the U.S. at 8 percent and 8.2 percent, respectively.
“The data from this report can help health planners develop more targeted prevention programs for states and populations with greater coronary heart disease prevalence (e.g., American Indian/Alaska Native men and black women),” the CDC researchers wrote.
