The Brain Health Benefits of Omega-3

Did you know omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in protecting brain health? Research shows that this nutrient can help people diagnosed with depression, ADHD and dementia.

In countries where people have diets rich in omega-3, depression seldom manifests. However, that is not to say these fatty acids are cure for depression. It is highly advised to speak with a doctor regarding this mental health condition.

With ADHD, patients have shown significant improvement after they have been introduced to taking omega-3 fatty acids. This nutrient is known to facilitate brain development and enhance mental function. However, it are not intended to replace conventional ADHD treatment.

As for dementia, there is a strong evidence that omega-3 fortifies the mental faculties, protecting people against age-related mental decline such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. In one study, people who were taking omega-3 supplements or eating a diet rich with these fatty acids were less likely to develop mental decline.

If you’ve noticed, a lot of pregnant women are advised to take omega-3 supplements for its brain-boosting attributes. But the U.S. Federal Trade Commission issues a warning against companies claiming these benefits unless they can scientifically prove it.

On the other hand, the American Academy of Pediatrics urges pregnant women and children to include fish in their diet. Top choices include salmon, mackerel and tuna. The medical body also warns against partaking of any fish that’s high in mercury; this includes tilefish, swordfish and shark.

If fish is not a viable selection, omega-3 can be derived from supplements. While you need to seek advice from a doctor first before taking them, 1 gram per day is recommended for people diagnosed with heart disease. There are reported cases where high doses of omega-3 interfere with some medications. Omega-3 can also be found in algae supplements as well as foods like spinach, broccoli, walnuts, canola oil and flaxseed.

Don’t be anxious if you have fishy burps or aftertaste after taking omega-3 supplements. It’s a natural consequence.
